The top has no screw threads so not sure about closure seal however it could have used a pop top like soda. Pectin is used to make Jam or Jelly when desired fruit does not have enough Pectin to make food item JELL as in become thick enough and not a runny mess. Liquid pectin is still used today but bottles do not look like this.
