#1310 Butterfly Locust veneer over Yellow Pine body. Dovetailed drawers & wood Pegs in Back.
NO handles, each drawer front is smooth with a brass lined Key slot, Drawers can ONLY be pulled opened with the heavy brass key (2 incl) which is why I dubbed this a 'Strong' chest. Details:the Edges of the front 'columns' are 3/8" relief at the bottom and 1/4" relief at the top as well as tapered side-to-side which is an ARCHITECTURAL detail. Furthermore, the drawer fronts and body face frames between them are mirror-image veneered to generate 6-arched panels full height of the chest's front. Remember now, this is ALL VENEER, obviously from one slab of highly figured wood. Wt= 190lbs. Lovely pattern on wood - very heavy. Dove-tail on drawers. 1959 "The Encyclopedia of Furniture, With 1115 Illustrations" ca1938/1959, pg.9 defines "Architect's Furniture" as "English Furniture of the 18th Century designed by Architects and exibiting architectural features such as arches, columns, etc."; and Picture #86 has similar example ca1815. (Whether this chest was MADE in England or America is the bigger question.) PS. Best way to accurately date this Strong Chest is by the lock mechanism. PPS *I'm calling this 'locust' because it’s the only match on my color "Woodworker's Guide to Hardwoods".
